Newsstands
Don Freeman was a passionate lover of New York. In the 1930’s and 1940’s he roamed the backstreets, automats, bars, subway stations, and theaters of Manhattan. Always with his sketchbook in hand. Some of his studies in the sketchbooks found their way into his Newsstands, a series of 14 (or so, depending on your numbering) collections of lithographs published by Don himself. (That’s Don on the left posing with his Newsstands. He was a born actor and loved to spoof on himself.) Some of the original sketches for these lithographs will find their way into this website in the near future.
