The First Earl

earl-original.jpg This is an illustration I found among Don’s works that appears to be the very first page of Earl the Squirrel. Here you can read how he had the story evidently “in one flash!” Don’s handwriting at the top of the page reads:

“Early every morning a young squirrel named Earl appeared
went to the window sill
where he would find a present
put there by his friend Jill.
nutcracker
a scarf
winter.”

Below the illustrations of Earl holding a nutcracker, is a sketch of Earl’s mother, the bull, and the tree with the acorns.

Further on down, you will see Don’s original title: “The Most Spoiled Squirrel in the World.”
