Don in San Francisco
February 23rd, 2008
I have received some questions about Don’s sketches with background in San Franciso. Here is a recent one:
Greetings! I have a sketch signed Don Freeman. It depicts the St. Francis. There is a trolley in the foreground, and appears to illustrate the his of San Francisco. The sketch is about 8 inches square. If you might be able to suggest a time period for the sketch, I would appreciate information.
Thank you;

Dear Barbara,
Don lived and worked in San Francisco several times in his life. Two periods that I know of are 1951 (when he finished and printed the sketchy for SKITZY) and 1955 when our family lived in Sausalito and Don worked on the idea and illustrations for FLY HIGH FLY LOW. Don also covered some political conventions and United Nations meetings in San Francisco. I will have to check his letters for exact dates.
I hope this information helps. If you have more questions or more details about the sketch, let me know.
Best wishes,
Roy
